Illinois Universities (continued from top)
Illinois is covered in college towns where student life predominates, providing the college and university life that many student looks for. If you should choose, Chicago, a major world city, has many colleges and universities that offer a more urban college experience.
To this day, Illinois still thrives in manufacturing, coal mining, agriculture, and oil production. The state's manufactures include food and agricultural products, transportation equipment, chemicals, industrial machinery, and computer equipment. The sprawling Chicago district (including a slice of Indiana) continues to produce iron and steel, as well as being a major railroad center. Chicago is also a Great Lakes port town.
Illinois Attractions
But as the manufacturing base gets smaller, Illinois is still a 21st century state. New businesses from high tech to retail proliferate throughout the state.
Agriculture-wise, Illinois is a leading producer of soybeans, corn, and hogs. Other commodities include cattle, wheat, oats, sorghum, and hay.
Central Illinois is noted for shrines and memorials associated with the life of Abraham Lincoln. In Springfield, the capital city, are the Lincoln Home, the Lincoln Tomb, and the restored Old State Capitol. Other points of interest are the home of Mormon leader Joseph Smith in Nauvoo and, in Chicago: the Art Institute, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Merchandise Mart, and Chicago Portage National Historic Site.
